Women’s Tour of Britain | Day 5
The final Stage of the inaugural Women’s Tour set off from a very windy Harwich.
The blustery conditions didn’t affect the racing with waves of attacks until eventually Emma Pooley & 3 riders went clear gaining a 40 second lead on the bunch.
Lasting until 10km to go with Wiggle and RaboLiv driving the peloton to bring everyone back together for a bunch sprint on the tight finish in Bury St Edmunds.
Vos, Branzini & Pieters contested the sprint with Vos taking her 3rd stage and win overall.
Helen & Jessie came in with the bunch in 50th & 58th and Penny, Harriet, Mel & Jo all finished strongly in front of the big crowds.
The team raced awesomely, exceeding expectation & impressed on the way.
Vulpine Founder, Nick had this to say:
When I committed as co-headline sponsor late last year we knew the likelihood of getting a Tour place was iffy. We were overjoyed to get a place when it came. Then came the time to race…
The attention has been extraordinary, with Road.cc's coverage, a BBC feature and a huge amount of social media activity. There's more to come in magazines over the coming months. It really helps that we're outspoken and love a laugh along the way. Mel Lowther was the youngest in the race, at 17. We are the only non-pro team. We have stripey kit. Etc. It all helped. People are hungry to hear about what we're doing. All kinds of people, cyclists or not.
I was in the team car with DS Stef Wyman today and we talked at great length about our burning ambitions for the team next year. This Women's Tour of Britain has blown expectations out of the water. The crowds and coverage huge. This is a massive help in ramping up sponsorship and proves what we've been banging on about with women's racing. It's exciting, fun, there's huge demand for it and its growing faster than the old school can keep up.
So we're ramping up a lot in 2015 and much if that is thanks to the Women's Tour for their faith and hard work. It's been brilliant. And even better next year!
