CELEBRATING WIGGINS VICTORY IN LOOK MUM NO HANDS

I had to be in a crowd. I needed to be able to understand what was happening. To take it all in, remember it, compute it.

I’ve been a devout pro cycling fan since I was a kid. I’d seen us win an occasional stage. Plucky tries. Doping scandals. All that. 27 years.

Now I was witnessing first & second. The World Champ on the same team, winning multiple stages, the best team. A clean team.

I needed to be able to put it in context. I needed the rush, rather than sitting open mouthed in disbelief.

So I went to what is surely the social centre of cycling in the UK. Look Mum No Hands! Everyone was expecting it to be packed, and of course it was.

Vulpine is involved in a small way in The Cycle Show, which was being shot there, so it was an unmissable opportunity to get a big cycling culture hit. Great heroes Gary Fisher (inventor of the MTB) and Grame Obree (reinventor of the ‘eccentric genius’) were there too. Incredible.

Amusingly there were loads of TV news crews hovering around, from the UK and abroad. I got nabbed for TV interviews by Sky News and BBC News. Somehow I managed to clear my head of the booze enough to bang on a bit about race tactics and what it meant to me for live TV. Strangely not that scary, though perhaps I shouldn’t have been tweeting on live TV…Note to self: Remember camera lenses are wide.

I’m no shrinking violet (snorts from people who know me) so I felt the crowd were being too quiet in the final kilometres, so I started a bit of cheerleading (with pom poms, of course). "Come on people. I’ve waited all my life for this! First! Second! World Champion and best team! Lets give it some!!" I was, as a mentioned, a bit pissed. People laughed. It was fun.

I hope you had as great a time wherever you were. I hope I’ll always remember it. It still hasn’t bloody sunk in. It means too much.
