Children. Beautiful aren’t they?
It was a real pleasure to take these images, although they’re a bit rough, as I was marshalling and I’d rather not get the shot than have squished kiddies on my conscience. (!!)
These were taken at a wonderful fund-raising event called The Firefleas, the kids’ version of The Fireflies Tour. Both are incredibly inspiring events that raise money and awareness for Leukaemia Research Charity Leuka. The Fireflies is a 9 day event over the high mountains of the Alps, and has a wonderful inclusive atmosphere and camaraderie. It is an extreme test of mental and physical resilience, but it is open to any level of cyclist, as long as you can finish! The Firefleas is 1 or 2 laps of the Tamsin Trail path, which is about 8 miles long, around Richmond Park.
Cycling for me is such an emotional activity, often full of innocent fun, but too often not, with road rage and adult politic. This event was certainly choc full of fun and loads of refreshing smiling faces. In these images you can often contrast the worn, worried faces of the adults and the pure joy of the kids.
It reminds me that cycling is a primarily for enjoyment, and that we should smile. It’s an expression of freedom and shedding our worries. These faces remind us of that.
