EPIC XC

‘Epic’. A word that’s almost become cliche. A word that conjures images of pain-wracked faces, hollow eyes and the beauty of suffering. A word that is synonymous with road cycling.

Somehow MTB has missed out on the ‘Epic’ kudos. Maybe images of muddy tea drinkers in baggy shorts chatting on squishy suspension makes pure roadies think it’s all a bit of a jolly (and it is jolly! Hurrah!)

If you’ve ever done a cross country mountain bike race, you will know XC riders have a claim to Epic just as much as anyone. A combination of lung ripping sprints up steep loamy climbs, rapid machine gun accelerations from technical corners, maniacal mass starts and outstanding natural beauty (mud) make for a lot of Epic.

But it’s not about being more Epic than another rider. It’s not about the differences in bikes and kit. ‘Us’ against ‘Them’.

The headspace if you are racing is the same. It is unfun fun. It is hard as hell. It hurts.

  1. Specialized don’t make an epic road bike but they do make and epic mountain bike.thus.that.answers.that. From now on- Epic is ONLY to be used for mountain Biking.
I suspect many other questions can be answered in this way. Himalayas- owned by mountain bikes- GT karakoram from back in the day… Alps- owned by road bikes. Every manufacturer has a road bike named after a famous climb. Not sure where this is going……
